The year unfolded quietly. After several years shaped by constant movement, 2017 settled into something more grounded. Most of the year was spent in Vancouver, working, keeping routines, and letting days pass without needing to mark them. Fewer photographs came from this period, not because nothing was happening, but because life had shifted inward. The moments became smaller, steadier, and less concerned with documenting everything.

Vancouver remained the constant. Days were built around work and familiar streets, neighbourhood walks, and the quiet comfort of repetition. Seasons came and went without ceremony. Winter gave way slowly, and routines held through spring and into summer. Life moved at a measured pace, shaped more by consistency than momentum.

February brought a small but meaningful change of pace with a trip to Sun Peaks. Learning to snowboard added a new challenge, one that came with its fair share of falls and slow progress. Cold mountain air, wide open runs, and long days outside offered a welcome break from the city. It was not graceful, but it was satisfying, and the experience stayed with me long after returning to Vancouver.

June marked the year’s main departure, with a trip south to Texas to spend time with family. San Antonio offered a slower rhythm. Long walks along the River Walk filled warm evenings, water reflecting city lights as boats drifted past. Days unfolded without urgency, shaped by conversation, shared meals, and simply being present.

Time at Garner State Park followed, centred on the river. Swimming, floating, and lazing along the banks filled the days, the landscape open and sun washed. The pace encouraged rest more than movement, a contrast to the years that had come before. Austin came next, familiar and relaxed. Evenings gathered around bars and live music, while dusk brought one of the city’s most recognisable sights, thousands of bats spilling out into the sky, briefly darkening the air before vanishing again.

Returning to Vancouver, routines resumed easily. Work continued, days blended together, and the city slipped back into focus. Summer passed gently, without needing to be marked by trips or milestones.

August brought another reminder of how closely Vancouver’s film industry overlaps with everyday life. One evening, filming for Supernatural was underway nearby. Lights, trucks, and crew filled a residential street, transforming it briefly into something else entirely. Spotting Jensen Ackles among the controlled chaos felt surreal, though the city absorbed it quickly, daily life continuing around the edges as if nothing unusual was happening.

The remainder of the year passed without urgency. Work, familiar places, late dinners, and quiet nights filled the calendar. It was a year defined less by distance travelled and more by stillness. The pause felt necessary, a steadying chapter before whatever came next.
