After saying goodbye to another traveller from Australia, Anthony, we arrived in Sorrento by train. Following a quick wander around town and dinner, we spent the evening exploring the city. Sorrento felt elegant and welcoming, a beautiful place to slow down after several busy days of travel.

We woke early the next morning to catch a ferry to Capri. Once on the island, we walked across the upper areas, taking in the views from above. A chairlift ride to the summit offered sweeping scenery across the coastline and out over the sea. One of the highlights was visiting the Blue Grotto, a sea cave entered by small boats where passengers lie back to pass through the narrow opening. Inside, the light fills the cave with an intense, glowing blue. The experience lasts only a few minutes, but it’s something I’ll never forget. Later, we found a swimming spot where it was possible to jump straight from the rocks into the clear, aqua water.

After returning to the main area of Capri, we caught the ferry back to Sorrento. Ryan went scuba diving while I spent the afternoon wandering through town, taking in the streets and coastline at a slower pace.

Early the next morning, we checked out and took our bags to the station before boarding a bus bound for the Amalfi Coast. The narrow, winding roads hug the cliffs tightly, often leaving barely enough room for a bus to pass, but the journey itself is part of the experience. We arrived in Amalfi for lunch, then continued on foot to Atrani, where our accommodation was booked. The hostel, run by Italian brothers, was relaxed and welcoming, and it felt like the perfect place to slow things down. We spent the afternoon at the nearby beach, a short walk away. Many of the beaches here are quite different from those back home in Australia, with gravel and small stones instead of sand.

Later in the evening, we walked back into Atrani to pick up supplies for dinner, including meats, olives, cheese, and bread, before heading back along the rocks. Another evening wander through Amalfi followed, before settling in for the night and chatting with fellow travellers.

The next morning, we caught a bus to Salerno and boarded a train bound for Rome. With the train leaving quickly, we bundled on and headed toward the capital, ready for the next chapter of the journey.
